What's your brand of magic?
We've all had something happen that we couldn't explain. You run into an old friend in some random city right after you were thinking about them. Someone offers you tickets to the sold-out show you'd been dying to see.
I call that magic. Not luck, and not chance. I mean a real ability every one of us has to make things happen in our lives.
Some of you are rolling your eyes right now, and I get it. But it's Halloween on Saturday, so humor me and keep reading.
You're circling a crowded block looking for parking, and you think, "The next spot is mine." Thirty seconds later, someone pulls out right in front of your building.
Did you make that happen, or did you just get lucky? There are two ways to look at it:
1) You're at the helm of your life, making magic happen.
2) Good things happen to you for no particular reason.
One is active, and one is passive. Which one makes you feel like anything is possible?
You so know the answer.
When you believe you're the source of your own magic, you get to be the superhero in your own life. That's a lot more fun than waiting around to get lucky.
I also think everyone has their own brand of magic. Most people just don't notice it. They call it luck and move on. I believe that if you started paying attention to the magic in your life, you'd get a lot more of it.
So where are you magical? Do you have timing magic, always in the right place at the right time? Are you the person who gets the last 20-pound turkey the day before Thanksgiving? Do you have bargain magic, where everything you want is somehow on sale? Are you a wish-maker, where you want something and some version of it shows up?
Look at the coincidences that keep happening to you. They might not be coincidences.
FIND YOUR BRAND OF MAGIC
1) Define it. Look at your life and notice the kind of magic you create. Write it down in one or two sentences.
2) Name it. Give it a fun name that captures it. A friend of mine calls hers "gift magic," because people hand her things for no reason. She gets offered vacation homes all the time, and not just any homes, really nice ones. When she moved to New York and needed a car, a relative gave her a classic Porsche.
3) Wield it. Your magic has a recipe, and your job is to figure it out. Think back to the last few times it showed up. What were you doing? What were you thinking? What do you think made it happen? Look for the pattern. My friend noticed that when she tells the truth and keeps all her promises, her gift magic magically (wink, wink) shows up.
This Halloween, you don't have to dress up as a good witch. You can just be one.
